I love your idea of "save on type" with versioning and baking the API into the OS. Then allow me to turn it on and off on a per-app basis. The undo should work step by step (as in most apps with editing functionality), or via a slider. Let's call it "Core Undo".

one more thought. While I don't want my desktop OS to be locked down like my iPhone, a opt-in (noth vendor and consumer) software app registry and update service seems like a no-brainer as an evolutionary step.

Services like getdropbox (which I use and is hassle-free) or mobile me (which has never seemed to be hassle-free) go a long way towards solving both the backup and version control problems, and Google Wave is going to solve a lot of this as well.

The only thing I disagree with is backups. Because for most this would be a hardware and software fix there needs to be a better way to do this all around, not just in the OS. But man I would buy this OS! Very nice idea's and as a SysAdmin would love to have this out there!
