"Looking over what TechCrunch did - it seems they did make an effort to minimize harm here and there. That is good. "

Publishing stolen documents, and in fact milking it for several posts and significant traffic is not minimizing harm. It's exploitive.

Our ethics are in line with each other but your pawn shop analogy doesn't work. I used to do tech support for some pawn broker POS software and I can tell you that for starters they over charge for everything since they expect to make money on loans. Two, they would never admit that they knew something was stolen because the cops are already in there every week breathing down their neck -- the company even offered free software for police so they didn't even have to visit the pawn broker to get the list of pawned items.

Society of Professional Journalists has a pretty good code of ethics. The second rule, but my personal favorite: Minimize Harm.

Did they do enough? Good question.

Scenario 3 - You're working for one of the largest phone companies in the world and you learn that they are secretly taping the public's conversations and then using software to filter them. Do you keep quiet even though it could cost you your job or provide stolen information to journalists so that they can help stop the trampling of civil rights? Who gets hurt and how is always a slippery things, the problem with ethics is that not every one sees the world from the same lens.
