Blu-ray will be every bit as successful as Laser Disc (already is, more so), so you decide if you think that is success at all.

Meanwhile I'll be doing something I plan to do for at least the next few years, enjoying the highest quality movies available.

I mean seriously, with the demise of DVD predicted after only 10 years and with technology moving as fast as it is today, how long do you think any technology will be around?

I have to agree with Ian. I think the next real physical medium will be solid state. The prices keep dropping to the point where I buy a jump drive and a few months later they've doubled the storage for the same price. 16 gb drives are here 100 gb solid state in a small form factor is not 5 years off and that is supposedly the theoretical end point for Bluray. I say good riddance...

I suspect, from Samsung's point of view, the reasoning is more along the lines that the dominant HD sources currently shipping are camcorders, and they increasingly have solid state media, not rotating media. (And 1080 video of me doing my harpsichord practice is a LOT sharper than anything upsampled I've watched to far!) In five years time, the price advantage that pre-recorded rotating media currently have over solid state may simply have evaporated....
