Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I still use an answering machine. I'm just happy about that it doesn't use tapes anymore. With digital recording, it's much easier to listen to only the new messages, and delete the ones I don't want.

Totally agree. I have a 16 year old son and a daughter in college. Both live on their cells phones and never listen to voice mail. They say, I can see who called me from the call log and I know to call them back.

Every time you text me, it costs 15 cents - maybe more when you send pics. :p For what it's worth, I have visual voicemail and I still don't listen to my messages. If it's important, they'll call back. A buddy of mine disabled his cell phone voicemail so he wouldn't have to respond since most issues end up being resolved before he'd call back.

Voice _IS_ appropriate for some messages, sometimes moreso than text. A morbid example: trapped victims of the twin towers able to leave VMs for their loved ones (an extreme case to be sure, but one where texting would not even get close). I'm sure there're many happier (and more pedestrian) cases of saying "goodnight" or "Three strikeouts? Great job!" to yr kids while away on a trip.

But you're right: text is more appropriate for many, MANY things that most people, out of inertia, use voice for. I cringe when someone leaves directions or a list of items on my VM instead of txting it. I've been using http://simulscribe.com/ for a year or two, and it falls squarely in "couldn't live w'o it" territory. For a few $/month they scan your VM by machine, transcribe it to text, and email or text it to you. Brilliant.

Different messaging streams (text, voice, drawings, whatever) aren't intrinsically better or worse than one another. Some are just better suited for certain tasks.
