As much as I like hockey (second only to baseball), I'm not so sure we can call them the number 4 sport anymore. It consistently draws lower ratings than nascar, golf and, most recently and depressingly, the ufc. I think nbc said it best when they backhanded the nhl by cutting away from a playoff hockey game in order to cover PRE-race festivities for the Preakness. As for mlb, this is consistent with their anti-consumer stance they have been taking, starting with the "exclusive" deal with directv that they were shamed out of by Congress.
