The rare savvy move by the nhl -- a league that desperately needs a boost. As much as I like hockey (second only to baseball), I'm not so sure we can call them the number 4 sport anymore. It consistently draws lower ratings than nascar, golf and, most recently and depressingly, the ufc. I think nbc said it best when they backhanded the nhl by cutting away from a playoff hockey game in order to cover PRE-race festivities for the Preakness. As for mlb, this is consistent with their anti-consumer stance they have been taking, starting with the "exclusive" deal with directv that they were shamed out of by Congress. My guess is they are trying desperately to protect their inferior streaming product mlb.tv.
