Exclusive Pix+Vid: New NETGEAR Skype Wifi Phone
May 25th, 2007 by Jeremy ToemanAs I’ve written before, (guest) blogging has its privileges. While at NETGEAR’s HQ last week interviewing employees for the blog, the company’s CEO, Patrick Lo, walked in and pulled from his pocket the still-in-development 2nd-generation WiFi Skype Phone!
This was quite unexpected, at the time I was getting a tour of the recently “remodeled” NETGEAR Digital Lifestyle Room from David Henry. Watch what happens at the end:
As I was scheduled to meet with Patrick after the tour, I did get him to spend a few minutes talking about the phone. As you’ll hear, there are no announced details at the time. He did spend another couple of minutes on the topic, but I’ll save that for the full interview with him, which you’ll find on the NETGEAR blog in the next few weeks. But here’s an excerpt to whet the appetite:
Whilst on the topic (yep, I said whilst), I also received confirmation from the company that the existing first-generation phone now supports T-Mobile service, which means you can use it in a Starbucks! As long as it doesn’t make it onto the planes, looks like mobile Skype is getting better and better.
Thanks for the scoop, Patrick!

[...] Filed under: Misc. Gadgets, Wireless While watching Netgear’s CEO play around with its “version 2.0″ WiFi Skype phone certainly isn’t as riveting as seeing the Nissan Dualist mech run around the streets of Ginza, the crew over at LiveDigitally was able to snag a few precious seconds of Patrick Lo’s time in order to catch a glimpse of the aforementioned device. The overall design doesn’t deviate too much from the existing rendition, and while Mr. Lo didn’t get into the nitty-gritty per se, he did drop word that it’ll be lighter, smaller, have a much improved GUI, last longer on a single charge, and “work seamlessly” with hotspots. Unfortunately, there wasn’t even a hint as to when we’d see this thing hit the market, but click on through if you’re interested in seeing the (very brief) interview.Continue reading Forthcoming Netgear WiFi Skype phone caught on video Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life! Did he get into the ability for 2.0 to use an SMS style chat with other Skype users? I *really* missed that (proposed and marketed) feature on the 1.0 unit. I use Skype more for text chatting than I do voice chatting…
