Hahaha - I was curious to see who’d be first to make the Twitter comment here (I was expecting Heidi). Here’s the thing: I have a blog, my blog has RSS, RSS can be subscribed via virtually any platform. So if I can post my update via my blog, why would I need to use Twitter too?

I recall living in new york, I couldn’t get used to this exact thing, but the city makes the call, and money is the focus and traffic during the workday is BAAAAD, so they do their work at night.
So do the cops
So do the ambulances.
One word, earplugs and a loud alarm clock or really good internal one.

Good point. I do find twitter an interesting social experiment of something between of SMS Broadcasting and Blogging. I have a group of 10 friends who use it just for that and I gotta say its pretty effective for that very narrow, specific situation. But Steve Rubel, Armano et al are going overboard with their micro-updates of their lives on twitter.
1. Twitter is just fun. The funness can’t be explained, only experienced. I know because when they launched, I joined and nailed down the ‘heidi’ user ID, then thought, “this is dumb,” and didn’t drink the koolaid until a few months ago.
2. While those of us who lean toward the geek end of the spectrum have emailed-enabled phones (and the data plans to cover that usage) which we can use to email blog updates for automatic posting to wherever, most folks find it easier (cheaper even) to SMS blog updates to twitter for display via twitter badges cut-and-pasted into pre-existing blogs.
3. Voluntary pull content. The updates get delivered via SMS, IM or RSS, depending what the recipient wants at any one moment. Most people don’t know how to push their blog feeds out through an SMS aggregator. Twitter makes this easy and free.
4. Some things you want to share are just short and better suited toward a push broadcast rather than a full blog post or the initiation of a conversation-triggering, one-to-one IM or SMS (where the average recipient feels the need to respond). E.g., “bird shit on my head,” “just typed ‘cache’ when I meant ‘cash’”, etc.
5. Did I mention it’s fun?
(PS, radar.net is an twitter-like MMS service for photos, but I don’t think they do video yet)
this comment is only referencing the term - “that’s janky” - I use this term 4-5 times a day, can’t help it, there is so much janky stuff out there, this is the best word for it! nicely done.
