I actually use the Triton bits - understand your points, but I did sign up for the free AIM phoneline, and guess what? I like it! Worth putting up with the current bits till they get better. I only have a cellphone, and use the new AIM number a bunch when I am not sure I really want the person ringing my cell. Works so far pretty well, and I get text msgs when I get a new voicemail. Not sure how much "live" talking I will do, but just as a free voicemail service it is already pretty cool. Let's keep the heat on for AOL to make Triton much more lean and mean, then I can have the best of all worlds.

I'm in Triton myself, and it's a mixed bag. It's a little slow and somewhat bloated, and I don't like the 'exploding animated smilies', but I do like the tabs a lot, and it feels a lot more polished than previous versions. Also, and most importantly, it saves a little history, so it's much harder to accidentally close a window and lose a whole conversation.

Go Skype!

Does anyone know how to get multiple profiles on Trillian? When I added my AIM name to the list it just merged my boyfriend's contacts into my list, which was awkward. I couldn't figure it out, which is how I ended up downloading Triton (and subsequently Classic 5.9.)

PS - Window tabs are hot.

I mostly use Trillian, a free multi-client IM app which does include window tabs if you so choose. No ads and very little bloat compared to Triton. I've also played around with Meebo which is a lightweight AJAXy type thing in a browser - still early in development, but promising as long as you don't mind sharing your IM credentials. (GAIM is an entirely free Sourceforge app which supports multiple IM networks and multiple operating systems.)

As far as voice goes, my cell phone always has excess minutes and Skype now offers free calls to US and Canada landlines (at least through the end of the year) which beats AIM and Y!.
