Tape Me Back To The Days

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Music and me are like peas and carrots. Money and me are like Tom and Jerry. So when CD’s came out, and blank tapes were abundant, I made copies of my friend’s discos compactos. The quality wasn’t as good, the shiny disk factor was null, but there was one advantage to purchasing tapes over CD’s: choice. I never bought the same blank tapes twice. With more selection and different colors to choose from, it was fun to run out of tapes and purchase new ones.

Some crazy Japanese site posted up every single blank tape ever made, ever. Those on dial up, prepare for a long load time, but it’s worth it. I think that the third gear tapes were my favorites. And of course the audioDEMAGNETIZER was always a favorite of mine. If I only had a tape deck in my car still, I’d rock out just one more time for the nostalgic factor.

Ever take it off any sweet jumps?

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about the whole “Napoleon Dynamite” thing when it came out – people raved about a movie that I almost immediately deemed a total waste of my time.

Having seen the film, I can appreciate it’s sheer absurdity, and the guys at eBaum’s World now have a Napoleon Dynamite soundboard full of audio clips from the film, plus a hillarious prank call using the soundboard. If ND’s not your thing you can check out the other soundboards on the site, from notable personalities Homer Simpson, Chris Farley and Howard Stern, among others.

Writing in Pajamas

Pajamas Media is trying to build an association of political bloggers, creating one of the largest business association for bloggers to join and make money. Here is the story for I wrote for Wired.

But here are some details I had to leave out. First off, from my personal interactions with him over the phone, Roger Simon seemed very passionate about this project. While I think its a good thing to try and empower bloggers, I came across a few in the blogosphere that think this is the first step towards the corporatization of the blogosphere, not its empowerment.

Blogs are set to evolve. Pioneers like Nick Denton of Gawker Media have paved the road (and us geeks have made him succesfull at it), but I think in the near future we are going to see a wide variety of platforms all trying to create corporations out of blogging. Pajamas, which will soon change its name, could be a successful one. It certainly has a strong blogroll and is already looking to expand.

One aspect that I find most intriguing was Simon’s intent on actually syndicating blogs to main stream media outlets like the Times. Would the New York Times or a Knight Ridder newspaper actually print material from a blogger? We will have to wait and see.
