Survival kit necessities?

Picture this: it's 4:03am on a Wednesday, and you wake up, the world is shaking. You're in the middle of a massive earthquake. You rush to your door, grab your survival kit, and wait in the doorway for it to end. Things get crazy, something hits you on the back of your head, you black out. You wake up, and find yourself in the midst of a sea of rubble. Your home, your block, your neighborhood, heck your whole town seems to be gone.

You grab your survival kit, and head to a clearing, where other survivors are assembling. Few have any possessions, so their eyes light up with hope as you open your kit. And you pull out a TiVo.

Ready for a healthy dose of brilliance?

Dependence and devotion to pop culture favorites were reflected as well. “I’m a Survivor and Lost fanatic so I’m set,” said Angela, a marketer in Minneapolis who believes her favorite shows have more than prepared her for the unknown. “I’d pack my CD player and all of my Celine Dion CDs.” Velvet, a communicator in Washington , D.C. , said her TiVo would definitely go. “Whew, that is the ultimate survival item!" she laughed.

Ahhh... That's nice.

According to the American Red Cross (press release link below), 25% of "tech-savvy" respondents included portable music players in their emergency kits. Am I wrong, or has the definition of "emergency" changed recently?

I've given it some thought, and I think there are definitely some digital devices that should go in an emergency kit. Here's my list:

GPS system	If things got bad, it would sure be nice to be able to navigate somewhere
PDA	for no other reason than to have a list of all my contacts
Walkie-talkies	safety in numbers
Top 10 CDs	You gotta have your desert island discs, man!
Digital binoculars	the better to see you with, my dear
Batteries	lots and lots of em

I'm sure this list could go on and on, and all of my entries would rank above a TiVo for "emergency" needs.
