Mini-DVD Player

CyberHome and Warner Home Video have announced a collaboration to bring yet ANOTHER DVD format to the public: an 8cm mini-DVD for "portable" use. Ready for the pitch? "Enjoy the superior entertainment experience of DVD in a size that fits in your pocket or your kid’s backpack!" Uh... What?

According to Warner Home Video, about 30 titles initially will be available, with more than 50 due in stores by spring.

Folks, I don't get it. Is this a response to the Juicebox from Mattel? They say it's for kids. KIDS HAVE GAMEBOYS! More to the point, KIDS LIKE GAMEBOYS!

I can't figure these types of decisions out. Sometimes I think it's a division with a massive budget that they must spend in the given fiscal year. At other times, I believe it's some product marketing manager with "a vision" (if so, please give that person some glasses). At least when Nokie wanted to intro a portable device, they took on the Gameboy, head-on.

For future reference: proprietary "media" devices, that use proprietary formats, with very specific/narrow usages, that aren't built by Sony, fail. Over and over again.
