Slappa CD/DVD Case Review

December 17th, 2004 by Jeremy Toeman

Yes, we are reviewing a CD and a DVD case. Yes, there are plenty of reviews of these exact same cases out there already. So what can we possibly do different? One word. Fire.

Our review team here at LIVEdigitally decided if we were going to review a “hard-body” case with “DURO-SHOCK” protection and a “heavy gauge zipper”, we wanted to make sure it lived up to its promise. Total Impact Industrial is the manufacturer of the Slappa brand of CD and DVD cases (iPod case coming soon), which promise to “Protect Your Digital Gear.”

Our tests involved a series of semi-typical day-to-day events that a CD case might go through, including: spilling coffee on it, dropping food on it, sitting on it, and a whole lot more. Oh yeah, and fire. Our good friend Ron joined us to put the case through the ringer.

Here are a couple of pictures of the cases (click on the image for a full-screen view):

The DVD case:

The CD case:

Coffee and Eggs

TEST #1: Coffee
Picture this, if you will… Ron (a great friend of the Ld) is having his morning espresso and making his daily visit web sites like LIVEdigitally. An email comes in, subject is “your stamps are ready.” He unwittingly clicks on the link, and there he is, knee deep in loosely clad latino women.

As one would expect, Ron spills his… coffee. It misses the books and his MP3 player, but unfortunately gets all over his nice Slappa CD case!

After a bit, Ron’s cleaned off the case, and opens it to check for damages. None. The inside is dry, his CDs are in great shape!
TEST #1: Pass!

TEST #2: Eggs
Later that morning, Ron’s hit the gym, and come back for his high-protein breakfast of champions. An orange, yogurt with Tabasco, nutritional supplement, and a raw egg. Mmm.Ok, the raw egg is new, but he just bought the Rocky Anthology, and thought it was a good idea.

Bad idea… Very very bad idea…

Oh no!

When Ron is done purging, he grabs a towel and wipes down the case. Not only did the raw egg NOT penetrate the casing, it wiped off great!

TEST #2: Pass!

Slappa CD/DVD Cases: Sitting, squeezing, walking

TEST #1: Sitting
Later that morning, Ron’s relaxing in front of the TV. Watching some “House” on TiVo. All is well. Although Rons find himself sitting a little, off-balance.
This was a no-brainer for Slappa. The hard-body completely withstood the glutes.

TEST #3: Pass!

TEST #4: Squeeze
Amazed at the case’s ability to hold up while under his rear, Ron decides to give it all he can. He attempts to squeeze the life out of it.

While he is able to make it bulge a little, Ron’s puny man-arms do nothing to the case or its contents.
TEST #4: Pass!

TEST #5: Walkin’
All is well in Ron’s little world. He watches some TV, listens to some music, relaxes. An interesting magazine article catches his attention as he gets up to go into the kitchen.Oops, his clumsy self steps on the case (which he shouldn’t have left on the floor in front of the stereo, but such is life)!

Again, the hard-body Slappa case withstands all 175 pounds of Ron’s weight. In fact, all that remains is a bit of a shoeprint.

TEST #5: Pass!

Slappa CD/DVD Cases: Dropping

TEST #6: Dropping
That same afternoon, while relaxing in the living room, Ron has his CD case by his side, but somewhat precariously perched on the window sill. It could happen!
While watching his LocationFree TV and perusing his newly purchased CD, Ron, ever-so-accidentally nudges the case out the window!

Oops! It plummets 50 feet to the concrete below!

Surely this must have damaged the case… But no! The “DURA-SHOCK” protection left the case in great condition, with all the contents intact. Some scratches marred the surface, but that’s the price Ron must pay for his carelessness. What was he thinking, leaving the case on his windowsill?

TEST #6: Pass!

Slappa CD/DVD Cases: Fire

And now, LIVEdigitally breaks the mold. We take a CD case to where no CD case has gone before… We are proud to present… Trial By Fire.TEST #7: Fire

After a few too many vodka tonics, our friend Ron has decided, for reasons still unclear to us, to set the case on fire. Accidentally, of course. Ron places the unit in his Weber.

Next, Ron “accidentally” soaks it in lighter fluid…

And, whoops… there’s a match!

Man discovers fire.

OK, seriously for a moment. We let the unit remain completely immolated for a good 5 minutes here, and even poured additional lighter fluid on it to keep the heat way up.

We then doused the fire, and decided to dive right in to see what we could find, if anything…

Ron’s first prying reveals the insides seem to still be there!

Holy crap, that’s a CD!

Not only that, the little shammy came through intact as well. In fact, everything on the inside of the Slappa case was in perfect condition!

Check out Ron! He’s a happy guy, who didn’t have to sacrifice his Mariah Carey’s #1 Hits CD to the fire gods.

TEST #7: Pass!

Let’s summarize the test and the results:
